You can eat anything, you can do anything.” People like that program. And as
soon as there is restriction, they do not like. Because we put so many
restriction, I am called in the western world, “Swamiji, you are very
conservative.” So we have to become conservative, follow the rules. Not that
we give liberty, that “Whatever you like, you do, and at the same time you
make progress, spiritual life.” That is not possible.

Sri Sri Guru Gaurangau Jayatah

Dear Nitin,

Please accept my best wishes. Srila Prabhupada ki jaya.

Religion according to the dictionary meaning means “a kind of faith” which
is dependant on time, place and circumstance. This is subject to change.
Something religious to one is irreligious to another. For eg; According to
Islamic?religion one who kills a Kafir or non-muslim is promoted to?jannath
(heaven) and according to Vedic religion?a ksatriya?who kills an?adharmic
person?attains svarga(heaven).?One who is Hindu today maybe Muslim
tommorrow and vice versa?but Krsna consciousness is the eternal occupation
of the living entity and is?not subject to faith.?Srila Prabhupada initiated
Western people who according to Hindu religion are considered mlecchas and
yavanas based on the Krsna conscious principle and raised them to the
highest position of Vaisnavas. This is considered irreligious?but should be
understood to be saintly.

There are many such instances where great devotees of Krsna were considered
irreligious and?even attacked due to their non-conformance to the religious
norms which are based on the bodily concept of life. Caitanya Mahaprabhu
Himself, Haridasa Thakur,?Prahlada, the gopis of Vrndavan etc. were all
considered irreligious according to their prescribed religion but were on
the actual religious platform of?serving Krsna in pure devotional love.

Please accept my humble obeisances
All glories to Srila Prabhupada
All glories to Srila Gurudev

In the beginning of the purport to the verse “paritranaya sadhunam….”
(B.G.4.8), Srila Prabhupada states that “According to Bhagavad Gita, a sadhu
is a man in Krishna Consciousness.? A person may appear to be irreligious,
but if he has the qualifications of Krishna Consciousness wholly and fully,
he is to be understood to be a sadhu.”

How is it possible for a person who has the qualifications of Krishna
Consciousness wholly and fully to appear to be irreligious?? It seems to be
contradictory, because if a person has developed full Krishna consciousness
then all his sinful propensities are cleansed, then how is it possible that
such a person will appear to be irreligious or sinful?? Please help me to
understand this point.

And how do we identify that a particular person is actually a sadhu despite
him appearing to be irreligious?

Can someone please provide some examples from the scriptures of persons who
despite being sadhus appeared to be irreligious?

Dear Nitin,
Hare Krishna,
All glories to Sri Guru & Gauranga.

There are many instances in Srimad Bhagavatam where externally the person
appears to be a demon or irreligious but at heart they are Krishna
Conscious.
One of the instances is of the demon Vrtrasura. SB Canto 6 Chap 9-16.

In CC we find the instance of Pundarika Vidyanidhi who externally seems to
be a lusty man to Gadadhara Pandita but when Mukunda recited Srimad
Bhagavatam (10.6.35) to him, he immediately went into ecstacy and later
Gadhadhara Pandita felt guilty of judging from the externals.

Moreover, if you read futher in the purport of BG.4.8 you’ll find; “whereas
a person who is one hundred percent engaged in Krsna consciousness is
accepted as a s?dhu, even though such a person may be neither learned nor
well cultured.” eg., Jada Bharata.

So the message is that we should not judge others because of their
externals.
Hope, I was able to answer your question.

Your Servant
> despite being sadhus appeared to be irreligious?
>

Example:
Gopis left their homes and husbands to go to dance with Krsna in the dead of
the night. According to social & religious norms its sinful. But because
gopis did simply to please Krsna it was not sinfull but the topmost
piety. *Atmendriya
priti vancha tare bali kama, krsnendriya priti iccha dhare prema nama*: The
desire to satisfy one’s own senses is called *kama* while desire to satisfy
Krsna’s senses is called *prema*. As long as we are under the control of
modes of nature the same action of sex life is for our own satisfaction and
thus sinful. But the same action completely for the satisfaction of Krsna’s
senses is spiritual and thus above the modes of nature and thus not sinful.
Thus to ordinary man it may seem like gopis are sinful because of his
perverted vision that sex life cannot be used in any other way than to
satisfy one’s own senses. But actually gopis are the topmost devotees of
Krsna.

Pure devotees always act in a way that are pleasing to Krsna whether the
action be sinful or pious. But the devotees that are acting in society in
general and are examples to the society does not violate the social and
religious codes because that will create havoc in the society. People will
immitate their activity and thus execute sins and ruin their lives. Thus
krsna says in Bhagavad-gita that generally He follows the rules of dharma
(see Bg 3.21-24). Generally the pure devotees who doesn’t follow the social
and religious codes doesn’t mingle with society in general and remain in
seclusion doing their bhajana. Their bodily necessities are next to NIL,
they are above the bodily conception and thus doesn’t have to mingle with
the society.

So for general case if a person, mingling with the society, is irreligious
he should not be taken as sadhu.

NOTE: It may so happen that a sadhaka is very sincerely executing process of
Krsna Consciousness but due to previous bad impression he may be found
performing some sinful activity because of force of the senses. But then he
is repenting and is sincerely working to rectify himself. He can be taken as
sadhu because of his determination to become pure devotee; only time is
seperating. That’s what Krsna says in Bg. 9.30-31, read purport also. We can
consider that whatever bad action he is doing is because of this previous
bad impression but the person hiimself is not insincere to become pure
devotee and thus will be soon purified and become a pure devotee giving up
all bad qualities. But one should also see that if the bad qualities are not
becoming rectified then there is some fault in part of that person in
following the process. Then we should try to help him.
The difference between apparent impious activities of a pure devotee and
impious activities of a sadhaka is that Krsna is pleased with the former
person and not pleased with the later.

Hope this helps you.

Thankyou,
Your servant,
Damodara Das.

I do not know what the Naga babas’ philosophical explanation is, if any, nor
is it very important for us to know their explanations. According to Bg
7.15, everything done by nondevotees is an offense.

> Dear devotees,
> Please accept my humble obeisances.
> All glories to Srila Prabhupada!
> All glories to dear Gurumaharaja!
>
> I would like to humbly ask you for advice. I have heard, even from senior
> devotees, two different opinions about non-devotees wearing Tulsi neck
> beads..
>
> One opinion is accepting it for Vrnda devi is a very merciful devotees of
> the Lord Krsna and anyone who wears kunti mala benefits.
>
> The other is rejecting wearing Tulsi if someone does not follow 4
> regulative principles. The reason is that the person is unwillingly
> creating serious offenses and therefore puts herself/himself into a
> difficult position.
>
> Please is there any reference from Srila Prabhupada or sastra regarding
> this matter?

I know no sastric reference regarding this except that tulasi beads are
placed on the neck of an initiate by the guru at the time of initiation. As
in most cases where there is no clear sastric stipulation, nor that of an
acarya, nor there is a traditional precedent among recognized Vaisnavas, it
is best not to do it.

——————————————————–
