Example:
Gopis left their homes and husbands to go to dance with Krsna in the dead of
the night. According to social & religious norms its sinful. But because
gopis did simply to please Krsna it was not sinfull but the topmost
piety. *Atmendriya
priti vancha tare bali kama, krsnendriya priti iccha dhare prema nama*: The
desire to satisfy one’s own senses is called *kama* while desire to satisfy
Krsna’s senses is called *prema*. As long as we are under the control of
modes of nature the same action of sex life is for our own satisfaction and
thus sinful. But the same action completely for the satisfaction of Krsna’s
senses is spiritual and thus above the modes of nature and thus not sinful.
Thus to ordinary man it may seem like gopis are sinful because of his
perverted vision that sex life cannot be used in any other way than to
satisfy one’s own senses. But actually gopis are the topmost devotees of
Krsna.
Pure devotees always act in a way that are pleasing to Krsna whether the
action be sinful or pious. But the devotees that are acting in society in
general and are examples to the society does not violate the social and
religious codes because that will create havoc in the society. People will
immitate their activity and thus execute sins and ruin their lives. Thus
krsna says in Bhagavad-gita that generally He follows the rules of dharma
(see Bg 3.21-24). Generally the pure devotees who doesn’t follow the social
and religious codes doesn’t mingle with society in general and remain in
seclusion doing their bhajana. Their bodily necessities are next to NIL,
they are above the bodily conception and thus doesn’t have to mingle with
the society.
So for general case if a person, mingling with the society, is irreligious
he should not be taken as sadhu.
NOTE: It may so happen that a sadhaka is very sincerely executing process of
Krsna Consciousness but due to previous bad impression he may be found
performing some sinful activity because of force of the senses. But then he
is repenting and is sincerely working to rectify himself. He can be taken as
sadhu because of his determination to become pure devotee; only time is
seperating. That’s what Krsna says in Bg. 9.30-31, read purport also. We can
consider that whatever bad action he is doing is because of this previous
bad impression but the person hiimself is not insincere to become pure
devotee and thus will be soon purified and become a pure devotee giving up
all bad qualities. But one should also see that if the bad qualities are not
becoming rectified then there is some fault in part of that person in
following the process. Then we should try to help him.
The difference between apparent impious activities of a pure devotee and
impious activities of a sadhaka is that Krsna is pleased with the former
person and not pleased with the later.
Hope this helps you.
Thankyou,
Your servant,
Damodara Das.
